Everyone is excited to see Kyle Shanahan deviate from what many assumed to be his prototype quarterback and go with a potentially dynamic playmaker in Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick. Fans are eager to see what the head coach and play-caller does with his new versatile weapon.

The former North Dakota State quarterback is equally eager to see how Shanahan utilizes his talents.


"He makes it work," Lance said of Shanahan during a one-on-one conversation with 49ers team reporter Keiana Martin on Thursday night. "Obviously, what he does on the field, his football mind, just the little bit I have gotten to talk to him, you can see it. And everyone in that organization is that way, so I'm really looking forward to it.

"His football mind is second to none, and everyone in that organization is just different. Like I said, just the little bit I've gotten to talk to him, it's one place I knew where I'd want to be and love to be."

Lance is in a unique situation. Most teams selecting at the top of the draft are doing so because of a lack of talent. That isn't the case for San Francisco. It traded up from No. 12 overall, and was that low to start because injuries devastated the roster last season.

The 49ers have a starting quarterback in veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. That means there is less pressure on Lance to jump in right away and excel. He will have an opportunity to sit and learn Shanahan's complex offense.

"It's amazing. It feels amazing," Lance said. "And even better, knowing the situation that I'm going into, the organization, just super excited."
