The Hall of Fame wide receiver is referring to Trey Lance, the quarterback drafted No. 3 overall by the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night. Rice is excited about the pick and could not believe his ears when it was announced.
And, Trey, if you need anything, just give Jerry a call.
Rice said that he's already spoken with Lance and is willing to continue working with the young quarterback as he embarks on his NFL journey. Maybe that means hauling in some passes from the newest Niner during pre-game warmups or even on their own.
Before the pandemic, Rice would often be in attendance at 49ers home games.
"We have a line of communication so he can reach out to me for anything," Rice said. "Also, I told him that if he needed me to run some routes for him and do those things, I'm still capable of doing that. He's got that rocket arm and all that.
"But (I'll) just be there for him and pass that knowledge on. I think that's the most important thing. And let him know that he's going to have highs; he's going to have lows. It's just how he can deal with those situations and just make his teammates better around him."
Rice feels the future is bright for his former team, and he can't wait to see what Lance does with his opportunity.
