Justin Fields of Ohio State will hold a second pro day workout on Wednesday. Five days later, Trey Lance of North Dakota State will take part in his second. Both are trying to ensure that they are selected ahead of Mac Jones of Alabama.

Trevor Lawrence of Clemson is expected to be drafted No. 1 overall. The New York Jets are expected to select Zach Wilson of BYU at No. 2. Assuming San Francisco targets a quarterback, that leaves Jones, Fields, and Lance as San Francisco's choices at No. 3.


Jones is the overwhelming favorite to be the pick if you ask members of the national media. Fans would much prefer the more athletic and higher ceilinged prospects in Fields or Lance.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch chose to attend Jones' pro day in Tuscaloosa on March 30, sending assistant general manager Adam Peters to Columbus to watch Fields on the same day. Of course, Shanahan and Lynch had already spoken to the former Buckeye quarterback's agent before deciding which to attend. He told the 49ers that another workout would be arranged.

On Sunday night, Peter King of NBC Sports reported that Shanahan and Lynch would attend both of the upcoming pro days. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirmed that this morning.

In addition to the news that the workouts wouldn't be open to the media and will be conducted by NFL coaches, Rapoport's colleague, Tom Pelissero, shared another interesting tidbit about the impending workouts.


"Not only are 49ers brass going to attend both the Trey Lance and Justin Fields second pro days," Pelissero said Monday morning on NFL Network, "I am told that what those quarterbacks are going to do on the field is going to be a mix of their original pro day(s), mixed with some drills and throws that Kyle Shanahan uses in practice. In other words, no, you cannot do private workouts this year, but this is about as close as you're going to get to what a private workout otherwise would look like.


"... [T]here are a lot of people who believe that Mac Jones is going to be the pick at No. 3 overall, but at minimum, the 49ers are trying to be thorough here and fully examining their options."

It's certainly advantageous to feature aspects of a prospective suitor's offense in your workout. Lance did so in his first pro day, despite Shanahan's and Lynch's absence.

The NFL Draft begins on April 29. San Francisco currently owns nine total selections.
