Sudfeld will earn a base salary of $990,000 this year, of which $252,000 is guaranteed, and the quarterback will carry a cap hit of $850,000. ESPN's Field Yates reports that there is $137,500 worth of incentives available.
One of those details from the contract was a bit of a surprise to a 49ers insider — Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. That would be the guaranteed money. It's a significant amount for a player who many assumed might merely be an additional arm for the team's offseason program.
Sudfeld became the fourth quarterback under contract for the 49ers. The team also has Jimmy Garoppolo, Josh Johnson, and Josh Rosen signed. The guaranteed money might indicate that the Niners consider Sudfeld a better option over the latter two names.
San Francisco is also expected to use the No. 3 overall pick on April 29 to add a rookie quarterback. Could the team enter the 2021 season with Garoppolo, a rookie, and Sudfeld as its three quarterbacks?
Sudfeld, a sixth-round draft pick by the Washington Football Team in 2016, spent the past four seasons in Philadelphia. The 49ers' current quarterbacks coach, Rich Scangarello, spent last season as a senior offensive assistant with the Eagles.
