On Wednesday, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that it would take a first-round pick for the 49ers to consider altering their plan for the upcoming season.
"I was told that, yes, it'd take a first-round pick for the Niners to listen at this point," Breer wrote, "which of course would be nice for San Francisco to have after it yielded its firsts in 2022 and '23 to jump from No. 12 to 3. ... As it stands right now? I don't think the Niners feel any sort of urgency to move Garoppolo, which makes his market value completely irrelevant in comparison to the Niners' price."
Today, Michael Giardi of NFL Network said the same thing as part of a larger report about the Patriots' draft plans. It is unknown if the statement is based on any new information or Breer's earlier report.
"What I'm hearing right now is the asking price is a first-round pick," Giardi told Andrew Siciliano. "That might be too rich for the Patriots."
It has been reported that the Patriots remain interested in Garoppolo despite re-signing Cam Newton last month.
San Francisco surrendered a second-round pick to New England when the Bay Area team traded for Garoppolo in 2017. At this point, it sounds like the 49ers feel they would need to make a profit to move on from their oft-injured quarterback.
