Tapp played 12 seasons in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Football Team, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before joining the college coaching ranks in 2018. He started as a defensive quality control coach at Central Michigan in 2018 before joining Vanderbilt as a special teams quality control coach in 2019. Tapp joined his alma mater last year.
The Seahawks made the now-36-year-old Tapp a second-round draft pick in 2006. He accumulated 332 tackles, 53 tackles for a loss, 100 quarterback hits, 29 sacks, two interceptions, a touchdown, 20 passes defensed, and 12 forced fumbles during his 12 NFL seasons.
Tapp played two seasons (2014-15) in Detroit, working with current 49ers defensive line coach Kris Kocurek. Aaron Whitecotton served as the 49ers' assistant defensive line coach last season but is leaving to join New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh as his defensive line coach.
