"He is, no joke, one of the best quarterbacks in the league," Young said on KNBR. "... He is poised to be one of the generational greats, and he's already proven that he can handle it."
Another Hall of Fame player and former Niner, Jerry Rice, joined 95.7 The Game on Monday morning and was asked about his former quarterback's comments. Is it a move that the 49ers should seriously consider?
"I just feel, if this guy's available, we've got to look into that," Rice said on The Morning Roast, "because we're not only talking playoffs, we're talking Super Bowls. I don't know what the cost is going to be or whatever, but if he's out there, and we can get him in uniform --"
Rice paused there to discuss Jimmy Garoppolo. If head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch truly believe he can remain as the 49ers quarterback, then they'll have to do what it takes to protect him and ensure that he stays healthy.
Still, the prospect of adding someone like Watson might be too tempting for Shanahan and company.
"It's crazy, all of the rumors that are going around," Rice continued. "But you've got to check into it. You've got to investigate it because if there's a player like Watson out there, you've got to entertain that."
Rice believes Watson should consider the 49ers a premier destination, should the quarterback look to force a trade. The Hall of Fame receiver even flirted with the idea of pitching his former team to Watson.
Added Rice: "But if the opportunity is here in San Francisco, I don't think Deshaun Watson is going to pass that up because everything is in place for him to win a Super Bowl. I mean, he's got everything on offense, he's got a great defense, and it's just there for the taking."
