Could Stafford be an option? Could head coach Kyle Shanahan and company make a play for the Detroit Lions quarterback? Maybe Shanahan will have a friend in the building if defensive coordinator Robert Saleh lands Detroit's head-coaching job.
Young, who joined KNBR on Wednesday, wasn't specially asked about Stafford. Nor was he discussing a link between the quarterback and the 49ers. He was asked about quarterbacks who may have had great careers if not for the lack of talent around them.
That's when Young brought up the Lions' quarterback.
"I'm telling you, Matthew Stafford is a tremendous football player," Young said on the Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "Matthew Stafford, with some help, is one of the greats of this generation. He really is. He's done miracles, in my mind. Miracles. And that's the thing. If you can say, 'Who's the most valuable player? The guy who's dragging around the most, and getting the most out of it.' I might say, 'Matthew Stafford.'
"... When you think about Matthew Stafford, you think he's pretty good, right? I can't imagine how good he'd really be if he had some help."
Of course, the 49ers could go in many directions after this season. They could replace Garoppolo with a rookie or veteran. They could even keep Garoppolo and draft some competition. Maybe Shanahan and company really do believe Garoppolo is the future and stick with him for the foreseeable future.
Once again, the quarterback situation in San Francisco is poised to dominate headlines during the offseason, and Stafford's name won't be the only one being thrown into the conversation.
You can listen to the entire conversation with Young below.
