San Francisco 49ers safety Jaquiski Tartt suffered a turf toe injury during the team's Week 9 loss to the Green Bay Packers and landed on injured reserve this week. This season, an unlimited number of players can return from injured reserve. Each just has to sit out three games.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan says Tartt won't be among those returning this season.


"Jimmie Ward and Tartt, they've been a little bit in and out," Shanahan said on KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "Being able to get them back in there was helping. Then we had that bad injury to Tartt, to where he got his turf toe. Nothing he could do about it, and his season's over."

Tartt started in all seven games in which he appeared this season and registered 28 tackles, four passes defended, and one interception. He may have played his last game with San Francisco. Tartt is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

The 49ers also lost cornerback K'Waun Williams to a high-ankle sprain. Normally, the team would place him on injured reserve and re-evaluate the situation down the road. Williams, however, has already been on injured reserve once this season. Putting him on the list again would end his season.

"Regardless of what happens, a high-ankle sprain for him is going to be about four to six weeks," Shanahan explained. "And we can't put him on IR-to-return, so we're just holding out hope that we can get him back here at the end of the year.

"But if that costs a roster spot, if there's something that comes up to where we can't do that, or it's taking longer, then if we put him on IR, he's done for the year. You can't return twice."
