Cowherd states that Darnold might "only" take a first- or second-round pick to acquire. You have to wonder if anyone would be willing to trade that much for Darnold if that was the asking price. The Jets could be gearing up to replace the quarterback with a top draft pick.
"Do you want a pocket passer past his prime (in) Matt Ryan or this losing quarterback, Sam Darnold, that everybody in America doesn't like, except me?" Cowherd says. "Because we know that Shanahan knows offense. We know Shanahan is smarter than us with football. And I think this is the one team that has the personnel — it's just injuries — that will bounce back next year if they get the quarterback right."
Darnold has completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 1,045 yards with three touchdowns, six interceptions, and a passer rating of 65.9, which ranks last in the NFL, through six games this season.
Convinced that Garoppolo's time with the 49ers is coming to an end, Cowherd added: "Who will they choose? Garoppolo, Matt Ryan, or Darnold? I'm going with Darnold. That's my gut feeling."
