Head coach Kyle Shanahan sounds confident that Jimmy Garoppolo's next outing will be better than his last. Hindered by his ankle injury, the quarterback was pulled after two quarters this past Sunday in the Niners' embarrassing 43-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

"Jimmy threw it good in warmups. He threw it good on the Thursday and Friday of practice (last week)," Shanahan said on KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "But when you do have a high-ankle sprain, that [can] come back in a game. And he got sacked a few times before that, and he started to throw it a little bit differently. You could tell it was affecting him a little bit. That's why I do think it affected a number of his throws after that.


"And the way the game was going, and when I could see his throws were being affected, that's why I made the decision I did because I knew what we were going to have to do to get back in that game, and I knew he was hurting, and it didn't look like it was going to get better. It looked like it was going to get worse, so that's why I made that decision."

Garoppolo has been a full participant in both practices this week as the 49ers prepare to host the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night. Shanahan feels confident that the decision to get his quarterback out of harm's way this past weekend will lead to a better performance in the upcoming matchup.

"Hopefully, from that, it ends up being right to where he avoided anything worse," Shanahan continued, "because he's had a good week of practices this week, and I expect him to come out there and help us on Sunday."
