The 49ers are reportedly bringing back tight end Daniel Helm, signing him off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. San Francisco will be without tight end Jordan Reed for six to eight weeks as he recovers from an MCL sprain suffered on Sunday against the New York Jets.
The 49ers are also reportedly releasing offensive lineman William Sweet from the practice squad.
San Francisco protected Hasty last week too. He played on Sunday and registered two carries for nine rushing yards and a reception for nine receiving yards.
In addition to increasing NFL practice squads to 16 players this season, each team can protect up to four of those players each week from being signed to other rosters. NFL teams can also elevate practice squad players to the active roster up to 90 minutes before kickoff.
Hasty will return to his unprotected status after the 49ers' upcoming game, and the team will have until next Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT to declare up to four new (or repeat) players to protect.
The Los Angeles Chargers signed Helm on May 10, 2019, as an undrafted free agent out of Duke, where he played college football after transferring from Tennessee. In 51 collegiate career games with 26 starts, he recorded 75 receptions for 804 yards (10.7 avg.) with six touchdowns. The Chargers waived Helm on August 1, 2019.
Helm spent most of the 2019 season on the 49ers practice squad before being promoted to the active roster on December 12, 2019. San Francisco waived the tight end on August 15.
