The 49ers lost defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas for the season. Both suffered ACL injuries in a span of three plays against the New York Jets.
The good news is that tight end George Kittle returned to practice on Wednesday after missing Week 2 with a sprained MCL and bone bruise, per ESPN. He was limited, though.
San Francisco is unlikely to have its two top running backs — Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman — on Sunday. Mostert's MCL sprain isn't expected to lead to an extended absence, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said Coleman could miss four weeks and is a candidate for short-term injured reserve.
The 49ers could also be without quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who on Sunday suffered a high-ankle sprain. Although, his availability hasn't been completely ruled out. Garoppolo did not practice on Wednesday.
Defensive end Dee Ford (back) also did not practice and is expected to miss Week 3.
"When you're dealing with a back injury, you really don't know the timetable," Shanahan said. "I know he's gotten some medicine this week that we're hoping helps, but that's a wait-and-see approach. So each day, you're looking at him to see how it goes."
Cornerback Jason Verrett returned to practice for the first time since sustaining a hamstring injury during training camp.
The Giants will be without running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver Sterling Shepard on Sunday. They lost the former for the season to a torn ACL and the latter is dealing with a turf toe injury. Shanahan will see a familiar face in the Giants backfield on Sunday. New York signed Devonta Freeman to replace Barkley. Shanahan was Freeman's offensive coordinator for two seasons in Atlanta.
Below are Wednesday's practice participation reports for both the 49ers and Giants, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff.
