San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after the team's 31-13 victory over the New York Jets. While the Niners won the game, they walked away with several losses on the injury front.

Shanahan said that the 49ers fear a high-ankle sprain for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. That would likely force him to miss time. Shanahan didn't want to speculate on how much time that would be.


Garoppolo suffered the injury in the first quarter as defensive tackle Quinnen Williams tackled him. Trainers worked on the quarterback on the sideline, taping up his foot and ankle.

Garoppolo returned to the game but left for the locker room early before halftime to undergo X-rays. He completed 14 of 16 passes for 131 yards with two touchdowns, both hauled in by tight end Jordan Reed. Garoppolo finished the game with a 140.4 passer rating.

"Jimmy I'm not really sure about. I know with it being a high-ankle sprain and stuff," Shanahan said. "I know he couldn't go in the second half. He'll see how that heals. We've got to get on a plane tonight, he'll wake up tomorrow, it'll probably feel much worse. But that's something where you really won't be able to tell whether he has a chance or not probably until the end of the week."

Defensive end Nick Bosa, who was carted off the field in the first quarter, appears to have suffered an ACL injury, says Shanahan.

"Bosa is most likely an ACL," the coach said. "We've got to confirm that tomorrow, but more likely."


Shanahan said that defensive lineman Solomon Thomas' injury, which occurred two plays later, may have been something similar but perhaps not as bad. He, too, was carted off the field.

"[Thomas] has a better chance of it not being that, from what I was told, but we'll wait and see," Shanahan said.

Bosa was in obvious pain before being carted to the locker room. Both he and Thomas were quickly ruled "out" for the remainder of the game.

The 49ers made Bosa, 22, the No. 2 overall pick last year, and he racked up 42 tackles, nine regular-season sacks, and added four more postseason sacks on his way to being named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. The rookie defender was also named to the Pro Bowl.

The 49ers made Thomas, 25, the No. 3 overall pick in 2017. He totaled 21 tackles and two sacks last season in 16 games and three starts last season, his third in the league.
