San Francisco 49ers players had Wednesday off but returned on Thursday for the third padded practice and fifth full practice of training camp.

Defensive tackle D.J. Jones left practice late with a shoulder injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said after practice that the defender was being looked at and didn't have an update at the time. Rookie Javon Kinlaw replaced him during practice.


Shanahan said wide receiver Richie James Jr. (hand), center Weston Richburg (patellar tendon), and defensive lineman Jullian Taylor (ACL) aren't expected to be ready by the start of the season. James could land on the non-football-injury (NFI) list while the latter two could end up on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list.
Shanahan remains hopeful that defensive lineman Ronald Blair (ACL) and wide receiver Deebo Samuel (foot) could be ready for Week 1.

Cornerback K'Waun Williams (calf) is week-to-week and Shanahan doesn't expect him back for a couple of weeks, at the earliest.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo practiced without his brace over his left knee. He wore it all of last season but didn't do so during training camp walk-throughs. Garoppolo started wearing the brace on Saturday as the team began full practices and did so through Tuesday. (The Athletic)




Defensive lineman Arik Armstead was suited up but did not take part in one-on-ones or team drills, as Shanahan had hoped. He has missed the 49ers' five practices due to some back stiffness. (ESPN)

Cornerback K'Waun Williams (calf), center Ben Garland (ankle), and tight end Jordan Reed did not practice. Reed, however, was seen sprinting on a side field. He missed all of last season due to the symptoms of a concussion. (The Athletic)

General manager John Lynch told The Athletic that Garland could miss "a couple of weeks" due to an ankle sprain.

Trent Williams is proving that missing all of last season won't necessarily mean a slump in production. The seven-time Pro Bowl tackle went 4-0 during one-on-one pass-rush drills against Nick Bosa. "Williams swallowed him a couple of times," reports Matt Barrows. (The Athletic)

Defensive end Dion Jordan was involved in a "minor scuffle" with offensive lineman Jaryd Jones-Smith. Teammates quickly broke up the skirmish, though. (Bay Area News Group)


There was another minor skirmish during practice, but reporters were too far to make out what happened or who was involved. (The Athletic)

Kendrick Bourne got into the end zone a couple of times off of C.J. Beathard passes during red-zone drills. "(Tight end Ross) Dwelley made nice diving grab from Jimmy Garoppolo for (a) score, then heaved ball against the nearby fence," wrote Matt Maiocco. (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Linebacker Fred Warner broke up two passes in the end zone on back-to-back plays against the first-team offense. (Sacramento Bee)
