The team acknowledges that Levi's Stadium may not be able to host fans in a "full or limited capacity" during the upcoming season.
"To ensure the health and safety of our season ticket members, players, coaches, staff, and the greater community and to comply with state and local restrictions, we may not be able to host fans in a full or limited capacity this season," read the email. "Given this uncertainty, season ticket members will have two options for payments made for the upcoming season: (1) credit your 2020 payments to the 2021 season; or (2) request a refund. In the event we have limited capacity at Levi's Stadium this season, tickets will be made available on a game-by-game basis at the season ticket rate. Members electing to credit 2020 payments to the 2021 season will receive preferred access to available tickets."
Those electing to receive refunds will see no negative impact on their account seniority or seat location but will not gain preferred access to ticket sales for the upcoming season, should any seats be made available.
The 49ers and NFL as a whole continue to work out the detail of holding a 2020 season. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the league to reevaluate how fans will experience football this year.
Other NFL teams, like the Baltimore Ravens, have already informed their season-ticket holders of similar options while noting that seating at M&T Bank Stadium will be reduced to a maximum of 14,000 seats per game. That's assuming even that number is permitted under state and local regulations. The situation remains fluid and could change drastically in the weeks and months ahead.
"With ticket demand expected to exceed any availability in 2020, ticket availability is not guaranteed for any member this season," the 49ers noted on the team's official website.
