The 49ers have had discussions about contract extensions for both players, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
"I know extensions for Mostert and Bourne have been discussed," Barrows wrote in this week's mailbag column. "... Bourne is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent next year, which is an incentive to get a deal done before March. Mostert becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2022 but, considering his contributions on special teams and on offense, is underpaid. That's the incentive to get a new deal done with him."
How far those discussions have gone, though, is anyone's guess.
Mostert led the team with 772 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns on 137 carries last season. He added two touchdown receptions, too, showing off his versatility. It was, however, his 29-carry, 220-yard, and four-touchdown performance against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game that made everyone take notice.
Bourne recorded a career-high five touchdown receptions on 30 catches that went for 358 receiving yards last year. He proved to be a reliable target for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Twenty-three of Bourne's 30 receptions resulted in either a first down or a score. Nothing changed during the postseason. He hauled in six passes in the playoffs, five of which went for either a first down or a touchdown.
"I've become a full-fledged Bourne backer," wrote Barrows. "He has far exceeded his expectations as an undrafted free agent and was Mr. Clutch for the team last season."
