Right now, Shanahan looks like a long shot for 2020. Eight coaches have better odds than the 49ers coach to earn Coach of the Year, according to SportsBetting.ag. The top-10 list is below.
| Rank | Coach | Odds |
| 1T | Bill Belichick | +1200 |
| 1T | Bruce Arians | +1200 |
| 3 | Mike McCarthy | +1400 |
| 4 | Frank Reich | +1600 |
| 5T | Andy Reid | +1800 |
| 5T | Kevin Stefanski | +1800 |
| 5T | Kliff Kingsbury | +1800 |
| 5T | Sean McDermott | +1800 |
| 9 | Kyle Shanahan | +2000 |
| 10 | Mike Vrabel | +2200 |
It's interesting to see Belichick tied for the No. 1 spot considering his team, the New England Patriots, are expected to take a step back this season following the departure of future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. Interestingly, Brady's new head coach, Arians of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is tied with Belichick with the best odds.
Shanahan last season led the 49ers to 13 regular-season wins, earning home-field advantage in the NFC and representing the conference in the Super Bowl. That came after a four-win campaign during the previous season.
San Francisco owned the No. 2 scoring offense and the No. 2 rushing offense last season, second in both categories only to Harbaugh's Ravens, who were eliminated in their first playoff game.
Three NFL coaches are tied for the worst odds to be named Coach of the Year. They are Adam Gase of the New York Jets, Doug Marrone of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Bill O'Brien of the Houston Texans.
The last 49ers coach to be named the AP NFL Coach of the Year was Jim Harbaugh following the 2011 season. Bill Walsh earned the honor following the 1981 season.
H/t to Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area for the find.
