"This was no easy task for the Bucs," Ian Rapoport reported on NFL Network Wednesday. "They had several teams who wanted Suh's services, including the 49ers, and including the Baltimore Ravens."
Suh, 33, is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All-Pro. He joined the Buccaneers last offseason after a season with the Los Angeles Rams, three with the Miami Dolphins, and five with the Detroit Lions.
The Lions made Suh the No. 2 overall selection in 2010 after playing college football at Nebraska. He registered 41 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and four passes defensed through 16 starts with the Buccaneers last season.
The 49ers locked up defensive end Arik Armstead for the foreseeable future by signing him to a five-year deal. In doing so, however, the team felt compelled to trade defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts. There, he immediately signed the massive long-term contract that San Francisco couldn't provide.
H/t to Patrick Tulini for finding the report.
