Gore entered Sunday's action 45 yards shy of Sanders' mark of 15,269 career rushing yards. He accomplished the feat during a run on 2nd-and-9 in the fourth quarter against the Denver Broncos. Gore gained six yards on the carry and then followed it up by adding another yard on 3rd-and-3.
The Bills currently lead the Broncos 20-3.
It's worth noting that all but two of the running backs in the top 12 are in the Pro Football Hall of Game. Only Gore and the other active running back, Adrian Peterson of the Washington Redskins, are not.
Gore spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the 49ers, the team that made him a third-round pick in 2005. He has since played for the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, and Bills.
Gore hopes to one day retire with San Francisco, an organization with which he remains close.
"I still talk to Jed (York), talk to Paraag (Marathe), I still talk to (former 49ers GM) Scot McCloughan, Gore recently told Al Sacco of KNBR. "I played 10 years there. I was blessed to play 10, and I know the business of it but I respect Jed. He let his guys make the decision on whether to bring me back and I respect it. Like I said, his mom (Denise DeBartolo York) calls me, his dad (John York) texts me here and there. It's like a family over there."
