Sunday was National Tight End Day, a new holiday born at Levi's Stadium. It wasn't Kittle's doing, though. Nor was it any other tight end on the roster. It was actually quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo who coined the term last season during a Week 2 home matchup against the Detroit Lions.
In the 49ers Studios video, you can see Kittle breaking down the pre-game huddle, interacting with teammates, catching passes, and celebrating touchdowns, even though none were his own.
Kittle finished the game with six receptions for 86 yards.
"National Tight End Day. I need 14 yards," Kittle can be seen telling Garoppolo.
The quarterback asks, "Why?"
"100 (yards)," Kittle responds. "We've got to give the people what they want, Jim. They're not here to see you. They're here to see us, man."
Then there are Kittle's comments after rookie defensive end Nick Bosa's interception of Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen.
"You drafted a cheat code," Kittle tells Shanahan while walking by him on the sideline.
Kittle later adds: "Sign him to a 20-year deal now."
The 49ers made Kittle a fifth-round selection out of Iowa in 2017. He has registered 40 receptions for 462 yards with a touchdown through seven starts this season.
