The Niners, of course, head into Sunday's NFC West showdown with the Los Angeles Rams — and beyond — without either of their starting tackles along the offensive line. That's in addition to the loss of fullback Kyle Juszczyk and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon for an extended time.
"Things have got to be available without being held ransom," Shanahan said. "We've got to be able to make smart decisions, and if there was a smart decision out there, we would definitely look into it. We look into it all, but it doesn't seem like many are available right now."
General manager John Lynch joined KNBR on Friday morning, and his words mirrored Shanahan's. The team will always look into possibilities, but they have to make long-term sense for the 49ers to pull the trigger on a potential deal.
"Never rule it out, but it has to make sense," Lynch said on the "Murph and Mac" show. "I think Kyle said [on Wednesday], 'It has to be smart.' Often times, the opportunities that present [themselves] in the media world on Twitter and all that, you make calls and those things aren't really available, or it doesn't make sense for our team because you're giving away too much.
"If something makes sense, we'll absolutely try to improve our team. But we do have a long-term vision as well as we want to be successful. This year we want to be successful and into the future. As long as we keep that in mind, if we can make ourselves better, we'll do it, but we really like our team, and I think the early returns are good.
"We are a team. We're not about just a couple of guys. We're a team, and I really like our group and the way they go about their work."
