Just one significant trade could make the San Francisco 49ers a dominant force. That's what a very vocal segment of the fanbase has been preaching since learning players like Jalen Ramsey and Trent Williams are available.

The 49ers are fine with what they have. That was the message veteran cornerback Richard Sherman delivered before Thursday's practice. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, after all, have assembled a roster that is 2-0, which hasn't happened in Santa Clara since 2012.


The 49ers aren't interested in Ramsey at the starting asking price of a first-round pick. It will likely take more to pry him away from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Sherman was asked if he feels the team needs to add to the defense with a big move, like one for Ramsey.

"I think we're good with what we have," Sherman responded. "We leave it to the front office. I don't make those decisions. But, obviously, they felt comfortable with what we had going into the season. That's why they cut the guys they cut and kept the guys they kept. We're really confident in our guys at every position."

What about at left tackle, where the team lost starter Joe Staley (broken fibula) for multiple games and will play rookie Justin Skule in his place?

"It's unfortunate we had an injury at tackle," Sherman said, "but thankfully, we'll get Joe back at some point during the season, and we believe in the guys we have to hold down the ship until he comes back.


"I think we're really confident in our DBs and our corners, our linebackers, our D-line, our O-line, our backs, our quarterback, obviously, and our receivers, so we're ready to go."

The 49ers are looking to start 3-0 for the first time since 1998 and will have to beat the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday at Levi's Stadium to do so. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. PT.
