Quick Notes
Tarvarius Moore worked at free safety with the first-team defense during team drills. Adrian Colbert had been receiving the bulk of the reps with the starters.
"Just want a little bit more, not versatility, but making sure guys are getting the looks they need," defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said after practice while explaining the switch, "getting the work that they need to be able to get better. As training camp gets going, we need to figure out who's going to make this 53-man roster, and giving guys different looks to see if they're able to do it is very important."
The 49ers defense was the clear winner coming out of Tuesday's practice. The offense, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, reportedly struggled.
Injuries
Defensive back Jimmie Ward was activated from the PUP list on Tuesday. Running back Jerick McKinnon, center Weston Richburg, and tight end Garrett Celek remain on the PUP list.

Running back Jeff Wilson tweaked his calf on Monday and did not practice.
Fullback Kyle Juszczyk had his foot stepped on during Monday's practice. He did not practice.
Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon appeared to tweak his knee during practice. Greg Mabin replaced him.

Nick Mullens was 7-of-10 passing. C.J. Beathard was 5-of-10. Nick Bosa impressed with three quarterback sacks or pressures. Defensive end Jamell Garcia-Williams batted down a Beathard pass. 49ers training camp: Highlights from Tuesday's practice
Takeaways: Cornerback Richard Sherman impressed in tight coverage against wide receiver Marquise Goodwin. Jason Verrett and D.J. Reed also made physical plays. Mullens completed his final seven passes after his first three went incomplete. The defensive front is causing the run game to struggle. Matt Breida, however, had a breakaway run. Defensive lineman Kentavius Street is the strongest player in the weight room. That is apparent on the field, too.

49ers' practice report: Sherman big reason defense thwarts Garoppolo
Takeaways: Sherman boasted his play after his blanket coverage on receiver Dante Pettis resulted in a Garoppolo-thrown incompletion on the first rep of team drills. The secondary dominated practice. Sherman was in coverage during another incompletion to Pettis, and another to Goodwin. The corner stuffed running back Tevin Coleman at the line of scrimmage. Sherman "flashed decent wheels" while catching up to Breida at the end of a long run. Receiver Richie James is making a strong impression.

49ers Practice Recap: Sherman sets the tone as defense takes control
Takeaways: Sherman is operating on a different level. The hit on Coleman fired up his defensive teammates. Witherspoon was having a good practice before leaving with his knee issue. Bosa had another strong practice. The 49ers linebackers have played well. The secondary disrupted the offense on Tuesday.
