Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.'s trade from the New York Giants to the Cleveland Browns is likely to be this offseason's biggest storyline. The deal seemingly came out of nowhere despite rumors running rampant that he could be traded. The Giants continued to deny that they were actively shopping Beckham but didn't specifically say they would not listen to offers.

The San Francisco 49ers were never reportedly having discussions with the Giants about Beckham. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports and The Athletic reports otherwise. He wrote on Friday that New York was asking for the 49ers' No. 2 overall pick, which the team deemed too valuable to part with.


"The 49ers were in several different times," Glazer wrote via The Athletic. "They tried during the season and they tried here in the offseason. Someone with the Giants told me they were asking for the second pick of the draft from the 49ers, which the 49ers weren't willing to do."

It is unknown if the 49ers made a counteroffer or if swapping first-round picks with the Giants, who own the No. 6 overall selection, as part of a potential deal was an option.

Beckham, along with defensive end Oliver Vernon, ended up going to Cleveland in exchange for the Browns' No. 17 overall pick in this year's draft, their second of two third-round picks (No. 95 overall), and two players.
