Rapoport was the first to report that the 49ers were "deep in talks" with the Chiefs for Ford. San Francisco already agreed to terms on a four-year deal worth up to $54 million for Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker and impending free agent Kwon Alexander. That deal can become official on Wednesday.
Ford was initially scheduled to become a free agent until the Chiefs placed the franchise tag on the linebacker at the cost of $15.4 million for 2019. Kansas City remained open to trading Ford as the team shifts from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 defense. He will need to get a new multi-year contract finalized with San Francisco for the deal to be completed, reports Rapoport.
Update: The 49ers have agreed to terms on a new five-year deal for Ford worth up to $87.5 million.
The Chiefs made Ford, who played college football at Auburn, the No. 23 overall selection in 2014. He recorded 13 sacks to go along with his 55 combined tackles and league-high seven forced fumbles this past season. Ford has registered 137 combined tackles, 30.5 sacks, six passes defensed, and nine forced fumbles during his five NFL seasons.
The 49ers were reportedly one of two teams interested in Ford, according to an earlier report by Rapoport. The other team was the Green Bay Packers.
The 49ers ranked No. 22 in sacks this past season after getting to opposing quarterbacks just 37 times. Ford has racked up double-digit sacks in two of his past three seasons.
