"He looks good," Shanahan said on the "Murph and Mac" show. "I'm not allowed to be working with him right now, but I was in the office a couple of days ago, and I was stalking him, watching him (on the practice field) outside my window, and he actually surprised me. He was running around, throwing, doing some stuff out of the pocket.
"I even had to call our trainer in there and go, 'Should he be moving that much?' And he said, 'He should be,' so it was cool to see."
Seeing Garoppolo move around that much is a good sign. Shanahan and the 49ers remain hopeful the quarterback will be ready to throw and do some non-contact work during organized team activities, which kick off in late-May. Garoppolo is expected to be completely healthy for the 2019 season and possibly cleared to be a full practice participant by the start of training camp.
Garoppolo is over four months removed from the torn ACL he suffered during a late-September matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. He underwent surgery to repair the damage in his left knee on October 3, 2018.
While the 49ers are expected to be cautious with Garoppolo's rehab, they are also eager to get the quarterback involved and prepared for the new season.
