The 49ers initially signed Dunbar as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Houston on April 30. He was waived on September 1 and then signed to the practice squad, where he has remained this season.
Dunbar registered 180 receptions for 2,430 yards with 11 touchdowns during his 51 games with 38 starts in four years at Houston.
The 49ers will be without rookie receiver Dante Pettis on Sunday. He left Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears with an MCL sprain. The team was already without veteran receiver Pierre Garçon, who dealt with a knee injury for much of the season before finally being placed on injured reserve on December 11.
