The 49ers are filling the vacant roster spot by re-signing quarterback Tom Savage, whom the team waived on Saturday.
Colbert's injury occurred during the third quarter of play when he and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon both attempted to haul in a pass thrown by Rams quarterback Jared Goff. Colbert landed awkwardly on his right leg and was carted off the field after a good deal of time on the ground.
Rookie D.J. Reed replaced Colbert at free safety after the injury.
Colbert had 21 combined tackles and a pass defensed this season — his second in the NFL.
