The San Francisco 49ers announced on Saturday that defensive back Tyvis Powell has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. To make room on the roster, the team released linebacker Terence Garvin.

Powell will wear jersey number 30.

The 49ers may be without safety Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. He was listed as questionable on Friday's injury report.

Powell was originally signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State in 2016. During his rookie season, he appeared in eight games and had three combined tackles before being released on January 4, 2017.

Powell spent last offseason with the Cleveland Browns and the Indianapolis Colts before re-signing with Seattle on September 19, 2017, as a member of its practice squad. He was released by the Seahawks on October 24, 2017, and signed to the 49ers practice squad on November 1, 2017.

Powell appeared in three games with the 49ers last season after being promoted to the active roster on December 16, 2017. He finished the season with three tackles on defense and two on special teams.

The 49ers signed Garvin on September 12. He registered one special teams tackle last week in the win over the Detroit Lions.
