The 49ers later announced that Garvin is being signed to a one-year deal.
Injuries to Malcolm Smith (hamstring) and Brock Coyle (concussion) forced the 49ers to search for help at the linebacker position. Second-year star linebacker Reuben Foster missed Sunday's opener against the Minnesota Vikings due to a suspension and will not be eligible to rejoin his teammates until after this weekend's game against the Detroit Lions.
The Steelers signed Garvin as an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia in 2013. The five-year veteran (now in his sixth season) has registered 77 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, a pass defensed, and a forced fumble over his career. Garvin recorded 25 combined tackles, a sack, a pass defensed, and a forced fumble in 15 game appearances and three starts with Seattle last season. He signed with the Miami Dolphins on April 11 but was released on September 1.
