"I think Kyle is the first person to ever call me 'Alf,'" Morris said on Tuesday during a KNBR interview on the "Murph & Mac" show.
The logic behind the nickname has nothing to do with the late-80s sitcom by the same name. It originated when Morris was drafted by the Washington Redskins, where Shanahan was his offensive coordinator for two seasons.
"Alf came about because Aldrick Robinson actually was in Washington when I got there," Morris explained. "Every time [Shanahan] was like, 'Al, Al, Al," both of us would answer, so he was like, 'Ok, you're Alf, you're Al.' So then it just made life a little easier, so when I hear 'Al,' I wouldn't answer. When he said 'Alf,' then I knew it was me.
"It was too much confusion between me and Aldrick Robinson on who he was talking to so he called me 'Alf.'"
It so happens that Morris and Robinson are teammates once again. The veteran receiver signed a two-year contract with the 49ers on March 10, 2017.
So if you run into Morris on the street, maybe refrain from calling him "Alf." That might be reserved for his head coach.
