Sherman left Friday's practice with a hamstring injury while in coverage during team drills against wide receiver Pierre Garçon, who caught the 40-yard scoring pass from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and headed into the end zone.
Guard Joshua Garnett (knee) is also receiving the week off. He has missed a week's worth of practices after banging his knee against a teammate during a practice on July 28. Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Friday that Garnett was getting a second opinion. That second opinion believes no surgery is required and the guard will continue rehab and receive treatment from the 49ers, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Neither Sherman nor Garnett will play during Thursday's exhibition opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
Other injury notes:
- Defensive lineman Arik Armstead (hamstring) is week-to-week
- Linebacker Brock Coyle (hip) will miss this week
- Offensive lineman JP Flynn (knee) will miss this week
- Linebacker Fred Warner (chest) is day-to-day
- Tight end Cole Wick (knee) is day-to-day
- Tight end Cole Hikutini (groin) will be limited on Sunday
