Richard Sherman took part in his second padded practice since returning from an Achilles rupture he suffered in November. He received some – probably unnecessary – criticism after going one-on-one with wide receiver Marquise Goodwin and allowing a catch. During Tuesday's practice, it was wide receiver Pierre Garçon's turn to take on the veteran cornerback.
Garçon was able to haul in the deep pass in the first matchup. The receiver seemed to get the better of Sherman on the second deep route as well, but the pass was overthrown. On the third matchup between the two, an in-breaking route, Sherman looked like Sherman. The All-Pro was able to haul in the Jimmy Garoppolo-thrown football for the interception.
The following videos show the three Garçon-versus-Sherman battles from one-on-one drills.
Below are some other notes from Tuesday's outing.
Quarterbacks
Garoppolo threw his first interception of training camp during team drills. Safety Adrian Colbert came away with the pick-six as the quarterback targeted wide receiver Marquise Goodwin.
At one point, Garoppolo completed 10 passes in a row. He was 14-of-16 during team drills before the Colbert interception.
Running Backs
Jerick McKinnon "caught a ton of passes," reports Joe Fann of 49ers.com. He had two touchdowns during 7-on-7 drills.
Wide Receivers
Trent Taylor finally returned to practice after having minor back surgery this offseason.
Richie James, who is having a nice training camp, had an over-the-shoulder catch from Garoppolo 35 yards down the right sideline.
Tight Ends
Breakout candidate George Kittle came up with his first big play of training camp. He hauled in a C.J. Beathard-thrown 40-yard pass down the right sideline.
Offensive Line
Mike Person and Erik Magnuson got work at right guard with the first-team offense with Joshua Garnett nursing a knee injury.
Jonathan Cooper (knee) was activated off of the physically unable to perform list before practice but did not take part in team drills.
Linebackers
Rookie Fred Warner got some time with the ones.
Defensive Backs
Tyvis Powell received most of the reps behind Sherman during team drills.
Defensive Line
DeForest Buckner came up with back-to-back would-be sacks of Garoppolo and several pressures.
With Arik Armstead injured, Jullian Taylor took snaps with the ones at the big end spot.
Defensive lineman Solomon Thomas appeared to tweak something on a would-be sack of Garoppolo. He told reporters after practice that he was fine and just got stepped on.
Injuries
Linebacker Brock Coyle and safety Jimmie Ward left the field after individual drills due to some tightness.
