The 49ers expressed interest in the younger Davis before the draft. Team representatives reportedly spoke with him at the College Gridiron Showcase and Symposium in Addison, Texas in January. Davis also had a private workout with San Francisco.
"I'm gonna be going to San Francisco for a private workout with the 49ers," Davis told Draft Wire in April. "They just got Richard Sherman, but they can use a few other corners on their roster. I know they're trying to build up that core of young corners."
Davis, who is from Stockton, California, was a two-year starter for the Roadrunners after transferring from Merced College. He registered 51 tackles (36 solo), six tackles for loss, three interceptions, 11 passes defensed, and a forced fumble in 24 career games. As a senior in 2017, Davis had 25 stops, four tackles for a loss, six passes defensed, and two interceptions.
The 5-foot-10, 200-pound cornerback had a 40-time of 4.5 seconds, a 9-foot-11 broad jump, and a vertical jump of 33 inches during Texas-San Antonio's pro day in March.
As Davis pointed out, the 49ers signed Sherman during the offseason. The team is also high on second-year cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon and has Jimmie Ward competing at the position. San Francisco added rookies Tavarius Moore and D.J. Reed in the draft and signed Tarvarus McFadden as an undrafted free agent to join a roster that includes K'Waun Williams, who signed a three-year extension in September.
"I'm one of those corners that can run through anybody, the running back, a receiver, the quarterback, it doesn't matter," Davis told Draft Wire. "I'm coming with aggression and physicality. I have ball skills, as well. I've never dropped an interception. I feel like every ball in the air is mine. I'm very sticky in coverage. I'm one of those guys that can play man coverage and be step-for-step with the receiver. That's one of my strong suits."
