Update: In an odd move, J.J. Wilcox has decided not to sign with the 49ers and left the team's facility on Tuesday to sign with the New York Jets.
The San Francisco 49ers are signing safety J.J. Wilcox to a one-year deal, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN. Wilcox will take the roster spot left open after the team waived defensive back Trovon Reed.
The Dallas Cowboys made Wilcox a third-round draft pick in 2013, and he spent his first four seasons with the team. Wilcox signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on March 11, 2017, but was traded before the start of that season to the Pittsburgh Steelers after he was unable to win one of the starting safety jobs. The trade sent a Steelers sixth-round draft pick in 2018 and a seventh-round draft pick in 2019 to Tampa Bay. Pittsburgh, which drafted safeties Terrell Edmunds (No. 28 overall) and Marcus Allen (No. 148 overall) this year, released Wilcox on April 30.
In five NFL seasons, Wilcox registered 226 combined tackles, a safety, 16 passes defensed, six interceptions, and two forced fumbles during 70 game appearances and 39 starts. His best season came in 2014 with Dallas when he recorded 74 combined tackles, five passes defensed, three interceptions, and a forced fumble. Wilcox started just five games over the past two seasons after starting 29 during the previous two. He had 12 combined tackles, an interception, and a pass defensed in 2017.
