The 6-foot-8, 315-pound McGlinchey has experience at both tackle spots during his time at Notre Dame. In three years with the Fighting Irish, McGlinchey started 39 straight games. With McGlinchey at left tackle in 2017, Notre Dame had the third-best rushing offense in the nation in yards per carry (6.25) and the seventh-best in rushing yards per game (269.3).
McGlinchey ranked as the nation's top run-blocking offensive tackle last season and the third-best overall.
At the NFL Scouting Combine, the 6-foot-8 and 309-pound McGlinchey had a vertical jump of 28.5 inches, a broad jump of 105 inches, and had 24 reps in the bench press. Other measurables for McGlinchey include an arm length of 34 inches and hands that measure 10 inches.
NFL.com projected McGlinchey to be a first-round draft pick.
ESPN's analysis of McGlinchey following the selection:
"McGlinchey is our top tackle, but ninth overall was a little early to draft him, especially considering that the 49ers have more pressing needs. Left tackle Joe Staley turns 34 in August and right tackle Trent Brown is coming off season-ending shoulder surgery, so making sure they give quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo sound protection is critical."
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, who compares McGlinchey to Jared Veldheer, wrote the following about McGlinchey within his scouting report:
"McGlinchey will need to add more strength and mass to his athletic frame in order to hold up against NFL power, but his technique and instincts are pro-ready. He could be a polarizing prospect based on inconsistencies from his tape, but he gets guys blocked at a much higher rate than he loses his rep. McGlinchey should become an early starter at either tackle position, but his ability to handle bull rushers and power at the point of attack will define the type of career he has."
Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst wrote the following the following about McGlinchey within his scouting report:
"McGlinchey was a terrific college left tackle who has the size, strength and attitude to eventually start on the right side at the next level."
