On Friday at 1 p.m. Pacific, Garoppolo will earn a $28 million roster bonus as part of the deal. As Field Yates of ESPN reminds us, it is good to be Jimmy G.
Garoppolo is preparing to enter his second season with the 49ers after spending half of last season with the team. He is also in his first offseason with San Francisco, which means he will have more time to digest head coach Kyle Shanahan's playbook. The 49ers' offseason program kicks off in April.
Garoppolo went through a brutal crash course after being traded to the 49ers on October 30. All he did with it was win every one of his starts with the team, which improving his all-time record as a starting quarterback to 7-0. Imagine what he can do with a full offseason under his belt.
"Each game he got better and better," head coach Kyle Shanahan said at the NFL Scouting Combine. "Versus Houston, he started out slow. That was his second game. But the way he played for the next three quarters, and then he followed that into Tennessee — and it was really after the Tennessee game that you realize, 'Alright, no one gets lucky like this each week.'"
Garoppolo's five-game win streak to end last season was enough to earn him a five-year, $137.5 million deal from the 49ers. He counts $37 million against the cap his season, according to OverTheCap.com.
