The move comes in response to speculation that Hyde may not fit 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's outside-zone offense. Hyde played his first full 16-game season in 2017, finishing with 240 carries for 938 yards and eight touchdowns. He also added 59 receptions for 350 yards through the air and fumbled only once all season.
Hyde was a second-round pick (No. 57 overall) by former 49ers general manager Trent Baalke in 2014. Hyde had a solid rookie season behind then-starter Frank Gore, amassing 83 carries for 333 yards and four touchdowns. Hyde had a four-plus yard per carry average in each of his first three seasons. That number dropped to 3.9 in 2017.
Hyde will split carries with Cleveland's Duke Johnson, after news yesterday that former Browns starting running back Isaiah Crowell has landed with the New York Jets.
Hyde finished his time in Santa Clara with 655 rushes for 2,729 yards. He scored 21 touchdowns in his four seasons with the Niners and averaged 4.2 yards per carry. Through the air, the former 49ers starting running back added 109 receptions and amassed 634 yards, scoring another three touchdowns. His three reception touchdowns all came in 2016, under then-head coach Chip Kelly.
