The 49ers signed former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman on Saturday to a three-year deal worth up to $39.15 million. As of right now, he will be paired with Ahkello Witherspoon, who started nine games for the 49ers as a rookie in 2017. Last season's other starter, Dontae Johnson, is not expected to be re-signed and is scheduled to become a free agent on Wednesday.
Johnson, who played college football at Montana, was a third-round draft pick by the then-St. Louis Rams in 2012. In six seasons with the Rams, he registered 328 combined tackles, 67 passes defensed, 18 interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns, and two forced fumbles.
Johnson started 15 games for the Rams in 2017 while accumulating 65 combined tackles, 14 passes defensed, two interceptions, which included a pick-six, and a forced fumble. In Los Angeles' playoff loss to the Atlanta Falcons, he made three tackles.
