Washington offered a contract extension to Murphy, according to NBC Sports Washington. Following the announcement of the offer, he tweeted out the following:
"Blessed and highly favored!! Thankful for the many that have helped me along this journey and super pumped for he opportunities to come!!! LETS GO"
Murphy (6-6, 259), who played college football locally at Stanford, was a second-round draft pick by Washington in 2014. In the three seasons between 2014 and 2016, he registered 112 combined tackles, 15 sacks, two passes defensed, and six forced fumbles.
In 2017, Murphy faced a four-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drugs policy but suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee during the preseason. Murphy was placed on injured reserve, which forced him to miss the entire season.
During his last full season (2016), Murphy had career-highs of 47 combined tackles, nine sacks, and three forced fumbles in 16 game appearances.
While the free agency signing period does not officially begin until Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT, NFL teams have been allowed to reach out to and negotiate with players' agents as of 9 a.m. PT on Monday.
