The new deal puts Goodwin's average annual salary in the range of wide receiver Robert Woods' contract with the Los Angeles Rams. Woods makes $6.8 million annually, according to Spotrac.com. Goodwin's average salary now ranks 25th among wide receivers, which is a significant jump from his previous ranking of 53rd.
Minutes after Rapoport's report, the 49ers confirmed the signing.
"From the minute Marquise joined our team, he has shown us everything we want to see in a 49er," said general manager John Lynch via a statement issued by the team. "He leads by example with a tremendous work ethic, a trait that helped him expand his repertoire as a football player and post his most successful season as a pro last year. Marquise earned this extension by coming in every day focused on doing his job and, as a result, he made himself and his teammates better."
Goodwin, who signed a two-year deal with the 49ers on the first day of free agency last year, started all 16 games in 2017 and registered a career-high 56 receptions for 962 yards (also a career-high) with two touchdowns. If not for a concussion suffered during the 49ers' Week 17 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, he might have eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving for the first time during his five-year NFL career.
When Pierre Garçon's season ended early due to a neck injury suffered during a Week 8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Goodwin stepped up as the 49ers' new number one receiver. He averaged over 106 yards per game in quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's first three starts for the 49ers.
According to Pro Football Focus, Goodwin led all wide receivers when it comes to his quarterbacks' passer rating last season when targeted on throws of 40-or-more yards. Quarterbacks combined for a phenomenal passer rating of 120.8 when targeting him at that distance. The next closest wide receiver under the same scenario was Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons, who provided his quarterback a passer rating of 96.8 while trying to haul in the football that deep.
Goodwin was named the Len Eshmont Award winner following the 2017 season. The award is given each year to the 49ers player who best exemplifies the "inspirational and courageous play" of Len Eshmont – a player from the original 1946 team.
Before 2017, Goodwin spent his previous four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, who made him a third-round draft pick out of Texas in 2013. Throughout his career, he has appeared in 55 games with 26 starts and registered 105 receptions for 1,742 yards and eight touchdowns.
