The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to trade cornerback Marcus Peters to the Los Angeles Rams as early as today, according to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN. The move means the San Francisco 49ers' wide receivers will face him twice a year. Schefter reports that trade talks are in their final stages.


Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the 49ers and Cleveland Browns were also interested in trading for Peters. The deal likely means cornerback Trumaine Johnson will not return to Los Angeles and will hit the open market at the start of free agency on March 14.



The Chiefs added veteran cornerback David Amerson and will officially acquire cornerback Kendall Fuller from the Washington Redskins at the start of the new league year on March 14 as part of the Alex Smith trade. Peters, who is one of the better cornerbacks in the league but became a distraction in Kansas City last season, was seen as expendable.

Peters, who is currently just 25 years old, was one of the top defensive players going into the 2015 draft. In fact, he was selected by the Chiefs one pick after the 49ers drafted defensive lineman Arik Armstead with the 17th-overall pick. Since then, Peters has been selected to two Pro Bowls (2015, 2016) and named a first-team All-Pro in 2016.

In three NFL seasons, Peters has registered 151 combined tackles, 55 passes defensed, 19 interceptions, and six forced fumbles. Two of those 19 interceptions were returned for touchdowns.
