The coin flip is being used as a tiebreaker because the 49ers and Raiders each finished with 6-10 records and matching strength-of-schedules (.512). Should the 49ers win the toss, they will select ninth overall. Should they lose the toss, they will pick tenth.
As noted by Volin, the result also impacts the New England Patriots, who own the 49ers' second-round pick. San Francisco sent the selection to New England in exchange for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who recently signed a five-year, $137.5 million deal to remain with the team.
"[Raiders general manager] Reggie McKenzie and I were kind of talking trash last week about our coin flip skills," 49ers general manager John Lynch said last month during an interview on KNBR. "We'll see how that goes but is it that big a difference (between nine and ten)? It could be. You obviously want to win it, but we'll let that happen."
