According to Rapoport, Kilgore's three-year contract, which he signed electronically from his home in Tennessee on Wednesday, is worth nearly $12 million with $7 million in guaranteed money. Rapoport states that the agreement has "some potential upside."
Kilgore's new per-year average places him just behind Ben Jones of the Tennessee Titans, who earns the 14th-highest average among NFL centers, and above David Andrews of the New England Patriots, according to Spotrac.com.
The deal ensures that newly signed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo keeps his new center and the duo continues to grow together. During Garoppolo's five starts to end the 2017 season, Kilgore played at a high level, according to Pro Football Focus. He was a top 10 center and didn't allow a sack or quarterback hit during those games.
"Excited for me to be the center and that relationship with Jimmy moving forward," Kilgore said via a conference call on Wednesday. "And excited about growing with the team and with the staff."
Kilgore is excited about the 2018 season, happy to be back with the 49ers, and eager to get back to work with his quarterback. He was scheduled to hit free agency in March.
"It was great," Kilgore said. "It was great to see that growth with Jimmy and to make the run that we had, and just something for us to build off of for next year."
Kilgore started a career-high 16 games for the 49ers this past season.
