Update: Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer reports that the Mayhew's interview with Carolina will take place on Friday, February 2.
Right now, Marty Hurney holds the role. He replaced Dave Gettleman last July as Carolina's general manager on an interim basis after signing a one-year contract, which expires in June. Hurney appears to be the leading candidate to take over the job on a permanent basis, but the Panthers are considering others like Buffalo Bills executive Lake Dawson, Houston Texans executive Jimmy Raye III, and now Mayhew.
Mayhew, 52, was hired by 49ers general manager John Lynch on February 9, 2017. He has experience as a general manager, serving in the role with the Detroit Lions from 2008 until 2015. Mayhew played cornerback in the NFL for eight seasons from 1989 until 1996 with the Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was part of the Washington team that won Super Bowl XXVI.
Lynch mentioned Mayhew on Wednesday during an interview on KNBR while discussing the draft.
"We have an extremely talented group of college scouts that work unbelievably hard," he said. "[Vice president of player personnel] Adam Peters does a great job of leading them and Martin Mayhew pitches in. So we've got a really good staff that believes in tireless work and some real thoughtful guys. And I think we've got a great plan and we will be prepared."
Mayhew was instrumental in the 49ers' trade last year for guard Laken Tomlinson, according to the Sacramento Bee. Tomlinson was one of Mayhew's draft picks in Detroit.
