While most fans have had opportunities to kick back and enjoy these past few 49ers wins from the seats at Levi's Stadium or in front of the television in the comfort of their own homes, Shanahan doesn't get to enjoy the games until they are over. He admits to not being the best person to interact with during a game because his focus is always what's happening on the football field, as you might expect.
Shanahan joined KNBR on Thursday night and shared what game day victories are like for him.
"You have to stay extremely locked in to do your job right, I believe," Shanahan said on the "Tolbert & Lund" show. "I know I have to. If I get distracted or I'm not completely locked in, I'm going to really struggle. I mean, I'll tell guys prior who don't know me, 'I don't have the best personality on game day.'
"I'm pretty concerned on what I'm doing, and I'm not going to sugarcoat anything else because I just don't have enough energy to do it. All my energy is focused on truly what the defense or offense is doing, what the fronts are, the coverages, the clock, the situation, the down and distance.
"There's just a lot of stuff going on that you've got to stay pretty locked in. You're competing. I enjoy what I do a lot, but you don't really enjoy [a win] until you get back in the locker room, and you take a breath, and you enjoy the feeling. But in the battle and the moment, that's about competing.
"Even though I'm not working out or anything like that, I'm pretty exhausted after games because you're mentally just so locked into something. It's much nicer after a win when you sit back, and you can just relax and enjoy what just happened, and that's definitely a lot more fun than the losses."
Once the game is over, and the 49ers have added a win to their record, Shanahan doesn't go out and celebrate as many of his players likely do. In fact, some may not even know he is happy at all about the victory.
"It's funny," Shanahan continued. "After games, I'll get home, and I'll just sit there, and people will be like, 'Aren't you happy?' I'm like, 'Ecstatic.' (They'll ask), 'Why aren't you running around celebrating?' Because I'm just sitting here tired, enjoying being happy.
"People misinterpret that but I'm just kind of exhausted from it, and I just want to sit here, have a beer, relax, and just enjoy what happened."
