The San Francisco 49ers won their second game of the season by defeating the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Soldier Field. San Francisco improves to 2-10 while Chicago drops to 3-9.

The game featured quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's first start since being traded from the New England Patriots to the 49ers on October 30. He finished the game completing 26 of his 37 pass attempts for 293 and an interception.

Garoppolo's 293 yards passing were a career-high. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the total set a 49ers franchise record for most passing yards by a player in his first start.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Garoppolo is one of seven active quarterbacks to win each of his first three starts (Drew Brees in 2002, Ben Roethlisberger in 2004, Mark Sanchez in 2009, Brock Osweiler in 2015, Carson Wentz in 2016, and Trevor Siemian in 2016).

Trailing 12-14 with 5:27 left to play in the game, Garoppolo led a 14-play, 86-yard drive to set up the game-winning field goal by kicker Robbie Gould with four seconds left on the clock. On the drive, Garoppolo completed five of his six attempts for 54 yards and converted on three third-down plays.

Garoppolo was 10-of-14 for 109 yards on third downs, with seven conversions. The 49ers converted 4-of-7 on third-and-long (6-9 yards to go). He was productive on intermediate throws (10-19 yards downfield) where he was 9-of-12 for 162 yards and an interception.


Garoppolo completed all eight of his passes for 105 yards while using play action.

Garoppolo was under pressure on just nine of his 40 dropbacks.

In his first game back in Chicago, kicker Robbie Gould tied his career high with five made field goals (5-for-5 at Arizona on October 1, 2017), including the 24-yard game-winning field goal with four seconds left in the game. He became the first player to make five field goals at Soldier Field since December 28, 2012, when Carolina Panthers kicker Justin Medlock did it.

Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin set a new single-game career high in receptions with eight and finished with a game-high 99 receiving yards.

Wide receiver Trent Taylor finished the game setting single-game career highs in receptions (6) and reception yards (92).


Edge defender Elvis Dumervil now has 104.5 career sacks and is one of just four active players with at least half a sack of 50 different quarterbacks, per Elias Sports Bureau. He had four quarterback pressures in 12 pass rushes.

Defensive tackle Sheldon Day recorded a team-high four run stops in just eight snaps played.

Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon was targeted just once and allowed a 14-yard reception to Kendall Wright.

Cornerback Greg Mabin played during just four coverage snaps and allowed two catches for 33 yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers offense went 10-of-18 on third down. The 10 third-down conversions by the 49ers were the most by the team since October 10, 2007 (10-of-19 against New Orleans).


The 49ers' final drive of the game took 8:19 off of the clock. It was the longest drive by the 49ers, in terms of time, since September 20, 2015, against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 49ers offense held the ball for 38:47, which is the highest time of possession by the team in a single game since September 28, 2014, against the Steelers (42:17).

The 49ers defense held the Bears to 147 net yards, which is the fewest it has allowed in a game since November 19, 2012 – also against Chicago (143 net yards). The defense also allowed just eight first downs to the Bears, which is the fewest since November 29, 2010, against the Arizona Cardinals (8).
