According to Niners Wire's Chirs Biderman, both 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and Brown did not believe the offensive lineman would practice. Brown participated in positional and individual drills, and Biderman noted that it didn't seem like Brown would later put his shoulder at risk in team drills, despite not being given a blue non-contact jersey.
Brown's possible return for Sunday comes on the horizon of Jimmy Garoppolo's first start as a 49er. The 49ers travel to Chicago for an NFC showdown Sunday.
In other related news from Wednesday, the 49ers brought back center Tim Barnes. Barnes spent time with the team this past preseason. Bringing back Barnes may have been necessary due to backup tackle Eric Magnuson's trip to injured reserve. Current backup center Zane Beadles could be moved to tackle, and the 49ers would then need a backup center. Barnes gives them that. Shanahan spoke about the decision to add Barnes back to the 53-man roster:
"You only get to dress seven guys, sometimes eight, which will hurt another position," Shanahan said. "But, you try to dress seven guys on game day, and you need a starting tackle and a backup tackle, and you need a backup center. We know Barnes can do that."
The team also placed running back Raheem Mostert on IR, elevated running back Jeremy Nichols to the active roster from the practice squad and signed two players – linebacker Boseko Lokombo and cornerback Channing Stribling to the practice squad.
Here's a full list of participation for Wednesday:
Did not practice:
QB C.J. Beathard (knee, hip), DE Elvis Dumervil (not injury related), T Joe Staley (not injury related)
Limited:
T Trent Brown (shoulder), S Adrian Colbert (thumb), TE George Kittle (ankle)
Full participation:
S Eric Reid (knee), DE Solomon Thomas (knee)
Brown's participation is a story to follow throughout the rest of Week 13.
