San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde is in the final year of his rookie contract. For the first time since becoming a starter, he has remained healthy. Hyde is on pace to get close to last year's rushing total and has already surpassed last year's receiving total by more than 100 yards – with six games remaining.

While the 49ers running game ranks 22nd in the league, only six NFL teams have rushed for more yards per attempt. Hyde has contributed to those impressive numbers with his 4.2 yards per carry.


On Wednesday morning, 49ers general manager John Lynch joined KNBR and discussed his starting running back.

"I think we set real high standards for him," Lynch said on the "Murph & Mac" show when asked how the 49ers have been able to get more out of Hyde this season. "I don't think the credit can go to us, though. I think it's on Carlos. I think, obviously, this is an important year for him with his contract situation.

"But I think he just saw an opportunity in a system where running backs have thrived before, and he saw a system that would be capable of utilizing all his talents. And he does have a lot of different talents.

"To me, he's a guy that runs inside very effectively. He can run outside effectively. He can catch the ball and really takes pride in being a pass blocker. I think he's got natural ability at that. He's also playing for a guy who's known as one of the greatest running back coaches to ever do it in Bobby Turner, and he demands it. Carlos has really embraced that.

"I think he learns football from Kyle [Shanahan]. He's loving playing football, and we love that. And it's starting to show up on the field. He's been excellent."
